This cell phone blog made sense before I wrote it...
Over the weekend, I went camping in Lytton, BC (aka the middle of the mountains). We slept in a tent, we drove off road through the mountains - we even saw a goat. At one point, we hiked our butts down the side of a cliff to the Thompson River, and unsafely took off our clothes and went for a swim. Much to the enjoyment of 3 boats full of white water rafters, by the time bf told me to "turn around" - it was FAR too late. Neon green bras do not make good camouflage, fyi. In that moment, I thought that my life couldn't get any worse. My blackberry hadn't worked since we hit the first mountain tunnel - but I was pretty sure that there was nothing worse was going to come out of this weekend then being seen naked, walking around in - as bf and I thought "the middle of nowhere" - by many, many lovely people, who were sharing the same campground with us.
When we left on Sunday, we stopped at this little gas station to fuel up our hungover bellies. I noticed a newspaper on the counter and took a glance.
"Winehouse Dead"
"93 in Norway dead"
Wait...what?
We had been away for less then 48 hours and 94 people died. I would have never been able to feel sorry for an entire country and music lovers across the world. This got me thinking - what on earth do people do without cell phone reception?!?! I can't even begin to tell you how many times (782613871623812897) I picked up my phone to see if somehow I was close enough to a tower, and not because I'm addicted to it (which I am) but because I can't imagine being so out of the loop of the rest of the world.
When I was little, my parents would watch the news. I would HATE that, like, to the point of ruining it for them every night by talking about how boring it was. But now that I'm old as dirt, I FRIGGING LOVE THE NEWS. And also love my cell phone because it keeps the news with me. Through Facebook, Twitter - anything - I know the minute someone in the world dies. I'm so incredibly happy for the technology inside of my phone that allows me to know this.
BRING ON CIVILIZATION - TOWERS EVERYWHERE - MUST BE IN THE KNOW.
