We like to make cakes, eh?

Just a few days ago, we got a call from a customer who was in dire need of a rather large cake for a Canada Day celebration. Their baker had backed out on them suddenly, and now it was up to us to take this monster creation under our wings.

2000 people....you don't say....

and it has to be how big? the size of my dining room table? Sure...no problem...?

Not that we weren't up for the challenge, I just couldn't wrap my head around this one! And so began the endless nights of laying in bed, staring at the ceiling, trying to figure out how to make it happen.

I met with the men at the Legion to discuss the regulations of size and found out that they had a cake board that was specially made for this annual Canada Day celebration.

"Do we sit on the board and hold the cake while you carry us into the room? No? It's just for the cake? oh......"

It was up to us to make it happen - and we did! It took one solid day of bake - cool - fill - freeze -bake - cool - fill - freeze - bake - cool....well, you get the point.

5 slabs later and my tiny freezer held nothing but cakey goodness!

As far as making red icing goes, this probably would have been easier to purchase pre-made red. But again, easy is not the way we work around here.
We prefer to go about it in a way that makes our hair fall out, our eyes go cross - but ultimately gets the job done.

In two days, and 82,342,234,098,786 icing swirls later (give or take), we are left with a cake that should leave everyone feeling a bit more patriotic.

And with the amount of icing on this bad boy...the party should last all night long!

We would like to thank everyone for their support on this one, and I would like to thank Danny (bf) for filling my icing bags when I couldn't feel my hands anymore. Good on ya, hunny :)

Another one down, onto the next!

When it comes to cake - I intimidate easily.

Every time an idea comes up for a new cake, I immediately consult with my good friend, Google. I don't know if I could have been a cake decorator before the internet. Sure, there are books, but for the sheer amount of cakes and cupcakes I can view in a matter of minutes using the internet - the books just don't cut it anymore.

Wouldn't you know it? 100% of the time - someone else has already made the exact same cake! In most cases, the creative genius has done such an amazing job that I start to fill with doubt...not good.

After browsing through the first 3-5 pages of masterpieces, I learn from others on what looks cute, what colors go best together, and what angles to take my photos from to make the cake look amazing. Once I get what I came for...it's time to rebuild my confidence...

A few clicks later and I find myself on the last page of cake images and encounter beauties like this:

An honest effort was put forth here, which I appreciate, but after looking at a few of these, I can now enter the kitchen with a smile on my face :)

heal the world, make it a better place...or one swarmed by media. either or.

Is it just me, or does anyone else find the image of a body being transported via helicopter a bit TMI (too much info)?

Michael Jackson 1958-2009

RIP MJ...and thanks for having albums where the playlist is long enough to drive from Southern Ontario to North Carolina without having to skip a song.

And to the media..stop filming dead bodies. It's just gross.

Rowrrrr Indeed.

The Mascot Cake came out beautifully.
Recreating Logos is quite the experience.
Especially with an audience.

Enjoy the last day of school, faculty!

Wondering what crazy idea will come next...and how much we will love it :)

I don't think that we could stick to just making your basic cake.

With every new customer, the creative juices (and mojitos....love those mojitos) get flowing and the possibilities are endless.
From time to time, the request is so outrageous that we look at each other and say "there's no way in he--.."

But then we take a moment and think...

What do we have to lose? We could attempt the cake and it could be the masterpiece that gets us on Oprah....or it could be a HUGE disaster and end up on Cake Wrecks...(a secret dream of mine...:)

Either way - I'm not complaining.

After a little brain storming session (which basically consists of us rambling about 'how cute this would be' and 'this color goes good with this color' and usually ends up with us getting loud and squealing uncontrollably) we move our butts into the kitchen to make our visions come to life!

From luxury automobiles:

To popular cell phones:

We can't wait to see what will come next. The more unique the better.

Side Note: still waiting for someone to order the Candyland Board Game in cake form, so if there is anyone in Vancouver who agrees that this would possibly be the cutest cake in the world - give us a shout!

How did it all begin...and when do you know it's even begun?

So we had been pondering this question for some time now...

So you make cakes for people you know, and sure, they turn out alright - but you know it's not your finest moment. You start to g
et recognition, and people start to request your services. You make no $... or if you DO make $, you buy a cute outfit and a diet coke instead of a tub full of pre-made fondant and rubber gloves.
It goes from one cake every few months...to quite a few cakes due every week...

So here's the real question....When is it time to stop baking as a favor to friends, and actually jump in head first and embark on the journey to becoming a successful entrepreneur ?! Are we even remotely close or can we quit our day jobs?! Please say yes, please say yes....

Sonja & Candice pondering life...and cake...

We are really curious to know how others began to consider themselves to having "taken the next step", as far as deciding to pursue this caking idea for a full time gig!

Brutal Honesty is greatly appreciated...we can take it. And if we can't, well, this is the internet so you won't have to watch us cry ourselves to sleep. :)

Please post your stories below in our comments section, as we would love to be able to share our crazy experience with others who have been there, done that and have lived to tell the tale....

Thank You - till the next time..

Love Your Cake - Remember that name, you're gunna need it one day.

Wow! Our first blog..I feel so technologically inclined now.

I figured we should document how two creative, young women from Vancouver, BC started a crazy kick-ass cake business that ended up getting them on Oprah and thus in turn making millions of dollars in baked goods......

no harm in dreaming big, right?

Seriously though, Love Your Cake started out as a hobby for backyard gatherings and siblings weddings and has since turned into an actual, and more importantly, profitable way to spend all of our free time. And I mean all of it! Luckily, we love the end result of nights of fondant frustrations an
d countless hours of kitchen floor scrubbing and icing bag cleaning.

Gone are the days of reality tv coma's and ace of cakes marathons on TLC, now we have actually migrated our way into the kitchen and have begun to create yummy and unique creations for our satisfied customers...

with Ace of Cakes in the background... ;)

Sonja & Candice @ MS Fundraiser Event 2009

Through word of mouth, grocery store advertising and many free cakes for many birthdays and other random events - we finally have a steady flow of customers who have provided us with nothing but positive feedback - and it feels gooooood.

With all of the social media outlets on the internet, it has allowed us to expand all over the world and share our creations with other people who share the passion for beautiful, edible art. And once we actually figu
re out what we are doing - we may just be onto something here..

Cake Inspired Vanilla Cupcake

I recommend that you stay tuned to our blog, we are pretty interesting people once you get to know us. And probably 10 times more interesting when we're half a bottle of wine in.

I'm just sayin'....

We would hate for anyone to miss out the chance to get to know the girls from Canada, who's love for cake got them all the way to the windy city and the stages of Ms. Winfrey herself..

It will happen - I'm calling it!

Good Night.

:)
